The niche of weight loss supplements is so popular that a new product appears quite frequently. The number of options is overwhelming but too many “miracles” deliver mediocre results at best. There is a range of all-natural weight loss extracts with garcinia cambogia ranking among the most highly advertised ones. Does it deliver the promised results or is this yet another marketing trick?
The garcinia cambogia extract is derived from the fruit of a plant called garcinia gummi-gutta or brindleberry. The plant is native to Indonesia and it produced yellow-green, pumpkin-like fruits. Most of the active ingredients are found in the rind of the fruit.
The garcinia cambogia fruit has been cultivated and used as food in Asian countries for centuries. The fruit is a curry ingredient and it can be included in the recipe for digestion remedies. In the Western world, garcinia cambogia gained popularity because of the possible weight loss benefits.
Garcinia cambogia extract contains a substance known as hydroxycitric acid. Hydroxycitric acid or HCA can possibly prevent the absorption of fat in the body. It supposedly will also enable dieters to control their cravings and decrease emotional eating.
Science and Research
HCA, the main active ingredient of garcinia cambogia extract, works by inhibiting the production of an enzyme known as citrate lyase. The enzyme is very important for fat biosynthesis. By affecting its production, hydroxycitric acid disables the body from turning carbohydrates into fat. This effect is especially powerful in terms of decreasing visceral fat production. Visceral fat is stored in the abdominal area and people who have tried to get rid of it know how challenging the process can be.
Several studies were carried out to test the efficiency of garcinia cambogia extract. Some of these have positive results, others came out as inconclusive.
The results of a Georgetown University study were published in the Nutrition Research journal. The study involved 30 obese volunteers who had a body mass index (BMI) of over 26. The experiment continued for a period of eight weeks during which the volunteers were divided in three groups.
The first group was given a high concentration of hydroxycitric acid, the second group received a lower dosage of the supplement and the third group was a control group whose members got a placebo. The volunteers in the experiment started a balanced diet and exercised on a daily basis.
At the end of the experiment, members of the group that got the highest HCA concentration supplement had their body weight and BMI decrease by 7.8 percent and food intake by 14.1 percent. A significant reduction was seen in the cholesterol level and triglycerides for the members of the first group. In comparison, members of the control group saw a reduction in body weight and BMI of 1.6 and 1.7 percent respectively. The reduction in food intake was 2.8 percent.
A Purdue University study had similar results. One group of volunteers was given 400 milligrams of hydroxycitric acid before each meal. Over the course of a 12-week experiment, the volunteers lost anywhere between 8.1 and 6.8 pounds.
Benefits and Reviews
The biggest benefit of garcinia cambogia extract is the all-natural and easy weight loss that it delivers. The result depends on the hydroxycitric acid dosage but studies appear to confirm the supplement’s efficiency.
Garcinia cambogia is capable of producing weight loss without dieting or exercise. People who decide to change their nutritional habits and start working out will experience even more satisfactory results by incorporating the supplement in their weight loss plan.
Though a few studies came out inconclusive, there is an array of clinical trials involving overweight or obese volunteers and confirming the ability of the garcinia cambogia extract to decrease weight and reduce appetite.
Garcinia cambogia will deliver a range of additional health benefits. It can be used for the regulation of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels because it prevents the absorption of fat. People with hypertension can try garcinia cambogia to stabilize their blood pressure.
The extract boosts the immune response. According to a few studies, it decreases the risk of getting a certain disease like flu or the common cold and if a person gets ill, garcinia cambogia can speed up recovery.
Studies show that garcinia cambogia extract is perfectly safe for usage because of its natural ingredients. Researchers agree that dieters can take garcinia cambogia for a period of up to 12 weeks without experiencing any adverse effects. There is insufficient research about the effects of garcinia cambogia during pregnancy and breastfeeding, which is why women who are expecting or nursing a child are advised to refrain from taking the supplement.
Because of its all-natural composition and the range of health benefits that it delivers, garcinia cambogia extract has been endorsed by Dr. Oz and presented during his show. Dr. Oz put emphasis on the safe and effective manner in which garcinia cambogia extract works as a fat blocker. Doctor Julie Chen was featured during the show, saying that garcinia cambogia is an inexpensive and efficient way to lose weight because of the high HCA content. According to Chen, taking garcinia cambogia extract can increase weight loss by two to three times.
Trying garcinia cambogia weight loss supplements is the best way to determine whether these really work. There is sufficient evidence proving the efficiency of the natural extract. The facts that it delivers additional health benefits and that it can stimulate weight loss without exercise make garcinia cambogia worth the try.
